The course teaches practical and theoretical development of concept and narrative, exploring a critical approach to image making in our local context. By engaging a variety of research processes involved in the building of a contemporary visual narrative, you will reflect upon the use of photographic technique to create and express meaning.

My experience at TTLC has been a re-awakening experience. Through the guidance of Michelle H and Michelle L, I managed to return to my photography practice. Like anything it was a real challenge to get back into it, I had my doubts and tons of insecurities but spending my year partaking in the Advanced Program helped me shake off those doubts and actually begin to enjoy and understand what I was meant to do from the get-go which is PHOTOGRAPHY! Being able to rediscover me and my photography has been the best part of being a part of this course. And that would not have been possible without the assistance of the dynamic duo MH+ ML.

A year ago I started my Advanced Course at Through The Lens Collective. My initial intention was to challenge myself to see if I could seriously work towards a solid body of work, as I hadn’t photographed seriously in a very long time. I learned a lot about how important it is to surround yourself with other artists.  In class, not only did I get feedback from my mentors, I received incredible feedback from my classmates as well. What stood out for me was that photography is one’s own personal investigation, and we’d often get assignments to challenge and help us with new ways of looking at how we create. I’d encourage anyone studying or thinking of studying at TTL to trust your mentors and do the assessments, as it will benefit you in the long term. Another major takeaway is the importance of being intentional, constantly asking yourself why, and writing a lot. I now own four journals thanks to TTL!!                                                                    Hazel Mphande
